RE: Camping while hitched up

I would also unplug the umbilical (but I don't know that this is necessary).
I unplug it and put it in an obvious location only to reming myself to put up the stabilizers.

RE: Replacing GM OEM hitch - what to get?

I don't think the problem applied to ALL GM hitches. If you would post the year and type of truck you have, I am sure others could tell you whether or not you have a problem hitch.

RE: Battery questions for dry camping for 4 days.

I'm no expert, but I think of the things you listed, the 2 hrs of televison would be a killer. Also, I think the group 24 and 27 refer more to the size of the battery casing than they do to capacity.
You need to look at the amp-hr rating. The more the better. And for what you want to do, you want a deep cycle battery, not a starting battery.

Storing RV at Michigan State Park Campground

Michigan has a new program this year. You can store your RV for up to two weeks at a state park campground for free. They are trying to entice people to camp multiple times up north without hauling your unit back and forth.
Has anyone tried it? Problems? Successes? We are looking at leaving our fifth wheel at Straits for two weeks.

RE: Camping in Michigan west side

The Lake Michigan campground mentioned by GizmosMom is too small for a 5th wheel (IMHO.) However just north of it is Breevort Campground, also in the Hiawatha National Forest. Just be sure you have the NFS one, not the one in the state forest.

RE: Ahhhh---man!!!

Couldn't you close the deal on the 5er and then pay a small hold fee to the dealer until you picked it up?

RE: extension cord

A lot depends on how the post is wired. If it is wired so that each of the outlets is on its own circuit, you would have access to the full 30 amps.
If not, you would only have available what they others weren't using. For example, if you are all on one circuit, when the total of the 4 of you exceeded 30 amps, the circuit breaker would trip. You might have 8 - 10 amps available.

Chained it to the bed of the truck between the hitch and the cab.
Same thing I do.
Me too.

RE: Campground near Mackinac / Tahquamenon Falls

Sounds like you might like Breevort Campground in the Hiawatha National Forest about 20 minutes west of St. Ignace just off of US2. Sights are large, there are flush toilets but no electricity.
Just be sure you are in the national forest campground, not the state forest campground near by. It's sites are very small.

RE: Michigan 131 or 127

... we're coming from Ft. Wayne so 69 is the first "big" road I'll be on. . . .
We live in Grand Rapids with family in Fort Wayne. Our route of choice is I69 to Charlotte, where we take 2 lane highways (M50 and M66) to Ionia. There we get on I96, which you could take to US131.
We have a little shortcut to avoid driving thru Charlotte which I can send you if you are interested.

RE: Michigan 131 or 127

You can read about the lane clossures and decide for youself, but other than that:
131 is 2 lane or 4 lane undivided until you get to Schoolcraft. It's limited access and pretty good shape except for the two contstuction zones I am aware of until you get a little north of Cadillac. Then it is 2 lane but in good condition with occasional passing lanes.
Personally I would take it over 127.
You might also consider US31 along the west coast.

RE: Electric water heater and didn't even know it!

I also keep the small pin installed in the outside switch to remind me from turning the element on when the tank is empty.
I have always been curious about that little pin. I put it back each time I am closing up. Why? I don't really know if it is needed or not, so I put it back. It's a real tight space and I need a needle nosed pliers to do it.

RE: Power to Trailer

Final Update.
Scot had it right, though it took me awhile to figure it out.
When you have the IBC as I do, there are three wires in play.
- The IBC wire
- The aftermarket brake controller harness
- The trailer power feed.
I finally found the trailer feed wire last night. Swapped it out for the aftermarket BC feed which I don't need, and all is well.

RE: 2008 chevy 2500 Integrated brake controller 12v problem

If you paid for an "Integrated brake controller" it should work straight off the dealers lot and not require any wiring connections.
It sounds like he was talking about the battery feed. And yes, it should have been hooke up also, but apparently wasn't. Mine isn't working either, though the IBC works great.
And I am getting 11 - 12 mpg with a Duramax.

RE: Got New Digital Convertor Box. WOW!!!

Whenever I go to a new spot I hook up the converter just to see what I can get.
I found that many local stations now broadcast a weather chanel. Nice quick way to find out what the day is going to be like.

RE: 8 or 6 ft bed????????

For us, the short bed will fit into the garage, the long bed won't.
I could have repoured the garage floor to get the truck in farther, but buying a short bed seemed cheaper.

RE: Replacing hitch question

Many hitches use the same rails. I don't know about Valley.
Unless the seller is going to take the rails out himself, he might as well leave them in for you. It probably would cost him as much to pay someone to take them out as a new set. When you reinstall rails you must use new bolts anyway. They cost as much or more than the rails.
When you buy a hitch the rails are usually a seperate item. I wouldn't buy a set for him. Let him do it.

RE: Ice Box Question

Sounds like you've got it. That's the way my ice box was.
One thing I used to do was to make my own ice. I found that a couple of 1/2 gallon milk jugs would make the largest amount of ice I could get into the tray.

RE: Do you dump your holding tanks after a weekend trip?

We also dump every time. The state parks here have dump stations.
I just can't bring myself to haul that "stuff" home and then let it set and perculate for a couple of weeks.
